I have to tell you something…
Read more →Consider this post a preemptive strike; an anticipatory explanation if you like, as to why my Facebook updates and blog posts *may* become slightly sporadic, as my embroidery time is interrupted. I don’t really blog about my personal life, I’m just not that into documenting ME, but sometimes life and work become inextricably entangled and so exposition is necessary. And I also suspect it brings us closer, oh invisible readers of mine. Let me explain and begin at the beginning: Some of you may remember that back in November 2011 me and the mister (for these decisions can never take...

Creative Conundrums and Poisonous Plants
Read more →It’s 2013 and we’re all still here! This feels like a special year. This is the first year I have ever begun where Mother Eagle is the business I want it to be, with no fear or anxiety that it’s not quite me, not quite right. For a while now I have been gripped with the desire to create a series of embroidered jewellery designs based on magical and poisonous (sometimes both) plants and trees. Mother Eagle would have these in her garden, and in the woods around her, know them well and use them wisely. Many years ago I...

Winter Solstice – Out with the old and in with the new.
Read more →As I look out of my window I see not the world descending into fire and brimstone, not do I see rogue planets crashing into us. Not even alien saviours or horsemen of the apocalypse. Just rain. The world has not literally ended. However, in my house on the winter solstice, I always like to remember what, in my book, this time of year is really all about. What our actual ancestors in this country did to mark this time of year (although midwinter rites are practiced all over the world in every country), and where many many Christmas traditions...

My life’s work…
Read more →Well, not my whole life, but the last 2 year’s worth of embroidery work all in one place! I just added an archive page to my website which you can view here which is a pictorial list of all my embroidery work in chronological order, starting with the latest. Longtime readers of my blog may recognise this as a version of the Gallery page I used to have at my wordpress blog, which I have now deleted, to keep everything in one place. All the photos link to the blog post where I explain how I made the piece. It’s...

Last Ordering Dates For Christmas
Read more →Everyone always says to me this time of year ‘uhh don’t you LIKE Christmas or something?’ Why yes, yes I love Christmas. IN DECEMBER. It annoys me so much in the UK that before Halloween has even passed all the shops are full of Christmas window displays and the TV is jingle bloody bells all the way. I always think it must be better in the States because you have Thanksgiving to come first so by the time it’s done then it really is ‘proper’ Christmas time. Aaaaanyways. Here are the FINAL ordering days I can accept for both...

How I Make Embroidered Jewellery – Step by Step
Read more →Stage 1 – find the inspiration! I said yesterday that in conjunction with launching my new site, I’ve also raised my prices. I’ve had this idea for writing a post like this, a bit of a ‘day in the life’ of one of my embroidered pieces, for a while and so I thought I would combine it with explaining why it costs what it costs to buy something from me. Now, this isn’t going to be a ranty, self justification post on the issue of pricing handmade. I’ve written about it before. I’ve written guest posts about it. I feel...

An Introduction to my New Mother Eagle Website!
Read more →My new Mother Eagle website opened yesterday. I am very proud. It took a lot of work and a lot of time, and let’s be honest, a bit more money than I really have right now. I also made a rookie mistake when I realised on Saturday that to transfer my domain – madebymothereagle.com – from my WordPress blog to my new store would actually take up to one week so it wouldn’t be ready for yesterday’s launch. sigh. BUT it’s totally worth it. I love how it looks, and more importantly how it works. It is a secure, smooth,...

What would Metallica do?
Read more →I found myself asking this question to the great Universe this week when I stumbled upon a link tweeted by Mollie makes editor Jane Toft, about Pinterest. This article basically highlights the fact that currently, the terms and conditions of the site states that: “You acknowledge and agree that you are solely responsible for all Member Content that you make available through the Site, Application and Services. Accordingly, you represent and warrant that: (i) you either are the sole and exclusive owner of all Member Content that you make available through the Site, Application and Services or you have all...

First day
Read more →I can’t remember where I read it recently but it was about genii and how they are mischevious and trapped in the lamp because of this. When you get them out they are so relieved they grant you three wishes but always find a loophole which allows them to cause more naughtiness. So, in this version, the farmer says ‘I never want to work again!’ and the genii removes his legs. That sort of thing (bit of a gruesome example there, sorry about that. It was actually in this story though). It’s the whole ‘careful what you wish for’ thing....
