What a difference a day makes…
Read more →Well this is embarrassing. Ten days since my last post. Pfft. First of all lets deal with this here silk ribcage, which will go into the Midsummer Collection and which I completed on Wednesday. Then I gots some explaining to do. I filled in the rest of the shape with my fine fine machine weight silk, chose a couple of other warmer shades for the spine and added some french knot spiny processes and (you probably can’t see this but) some subtle shading lines on the under edge of each rib. Then I spent some time outlining the ribs in...

Ribcage Redux
Read more →So I realise I’ve not been keeping up my one-new-design-a-week typical blogging schedule this last 2 weeks ish. This is not only because of the wonderful and long longed for distractions of things like this picture – the honestly really real life beach covered in snow and topped with azure sky scene at the (almost) bottom of my street WHERE I NOW LIVE. Sigh. It’s also not only because of distractions like Ice Cream Sundaes (yes capitalised because they are Sundaes of God-like status in my house), a soothing balm-slash-reward enjoyed slightly too frequently since moving to the seaside (FYI...

Second Skull Re-Do
Read more →So as with the 3/4′s Skull, let’s do a little compare and contrast…That’s the new version, and here’s the original prototype: Hmmm. The differences = single strand instead of 2-ply cotton, same colour palette, but honestly the curves of the stitches this time are SO much better. VERY pleased with this re-do! here’s the step-by-step: You can see I’m still having a little trouble with my transfer bleeding on this finer fabric. I took more care to make sure the eyes were squarish, and the cheekbone contouring too. Not a very good pic (aren’t they all) but showing you...

The Red Death
Read more →I have thought about doing a full skeleton for ages, but obviously not something that can be executed well on a teeny scale. But as soon as I looked at my new doilies I knew the time had come. I started in the normal way – found the ideal skeleton illustration, sized it up and traced him. I knew transferring it would be a one-shot thing as there would be no way I could reposition such an intricate image. Unfortunately it didn’t go well, and I ended up with a legless skeleton. Sigh. In my mind’s eye he was to...

Groan.
Read more →Groan is how I feel today. I might be feeling less groan had I not been robbed earlier, but there you go. Also groan because I spent a lot of hours embroidering over the weekend – more than I expected – and doing other stuff too, and ran out of time to blog, so I am actually blogging LIVE today! As opposed to being terribly organised and pre-writing and scheduling my posts. This embroidery KICKED MY ASS this weekend and I only finished it past 10 last night, so I am having to just tell you about it now. It...

Bone Disaster!
Read more →So it turns out not ALL vintage 1950s cotton pillowcases are created equal when it comes to upcycling them for embroidery fabric. There I was happily working through my latest batch of new designs I had transferred to my roller frame. Couple days later… ‘hmmm’, I thought, ‘it appears this permanent iron-on transfer pen is fading!’ But my stitch pit is right in front of the window and we have just had our 4 days of summer, so maybe I thought, I have been lax in covering up my work and have myself to blame for the sun bleaching. Well,...

Zombie Skull
Read more →Be honest, that wins the award for the best blog post title you saw today, yes? I had printed up another skull face pattern like the one I did here and as I was contemplating doing it, a feeling like ‘pfft I don’t feel like doing more bones’ took me. Shock horror, I know. ‘What is wrong with me!?’ I thought. I was trapped in a place between responsibility to my business plans and creative motivation. Then a notion gripped me, like the icy death grip of a zombie’s bony hand around my ankle. Or something. Zombie skull! Variegated silk,...

Sooner or later therell be a whole skeleton
Read more →I just realised today I have been a bit lax in putting my little finger in these shots to show you the scale. Sorry about that. Rest assured they are all pigmy sized. These are both done in 2-ply cotton in split stitch again, with a little satin stitch over the sacrum on the pelvis.

Radioactive Alien Ribcage?
Read more →Admit it, when you read the title of this post you just had to read on, right? ;) Here’s some more of what I completed this weekend. I had a great response to the ribcage embroidery pendant I made and I have to say, she’s up there with my favorites too. The colour variations achieved on that one due to using a varigated silk thread were really pretty, so I wanted to try something a bit bolder, and go for a smoother finish. Clearly, he has the correct number of ribs this time, so a male ribcage. This hot purple...
