This is a vintage, handmade cotton lace
doily from the 1950s, on to which I have embroidered a human rib cage,
beautifully stitched in miniature in the finest, shiniest silk.
Using Pearsalls Filoselle silk filament, the embroidery has been worked in
split stitch using 4 shades - Plum, Lilac, Anemone, and Shell Pink. The piece is finished in a fine
outline of 100% cotton. It is stunningly pretty - like a Neapolitan ice cream -
yet with a melancholy reminiscent of Victorian or Edwardian era art.
The lace itself is the most intricate and detailed of all the antique doilies
in my collection. A traditional floral motif, it surrounds a small panel of the
finest cotton. The silk threads are extremely lovely and smooth, and reflects
the light beautifully.
Perfect as a gift to the one that holds your heart.

The embroidery alone took over 7 hours to create. It is completely unique, one
of a kind piece and can never be replicated. I have mounted the doily onto
almost-black dark blue recycled felt, and it is framed behind glass into a
black wooden frame measuring 8" square. It is ready to hang.

About vintage doilies: These doilies have been collected by my family over
generations. Most are hand-made or hand-finished. All have been thoroughly but
carefully washed and pressed before embroidering, but may still bare some
discolouration that is simply indicative of their age - at least 60 years old.
